2025 RMC World Finals qualifying day full of challenges as Team Taiwan looks to fight back in the heats

2025 ROTAX Max Challenge
The 2025 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Bahrain moved into its third day, with the focus on each class’s qualifying sessions and the first heats. The organisers had originally planned to complete all qualifying and Heat 1 runs, but timing system issues caused major delays to the schedule, forcing some heats to be postponed to today. Although many of the Taiwanese drivers did not achieve the qualifying results they had hoped for, they endured a tough day against world-class competition and constantly changing conditions, and are now ready to give everything in the upcoming heats.

Micro / Mini:
Micro / Mini: Tough qualifying for Huang, heat restart for Chou

In the Micro Max class, Huang Yen-Chang suffered a setback in qualifying when his engine stalled after leaving the pit lane and could not be restarted, forcing him to retire early and be classified as DNF in 36th place. Despite having to start Heat 1 from the very back of the grid in P36, he drove steadily, stayed clear of on-track incidents and eventually brought the kart home in 30th, gaining valuable experience in his first official race at the World Finals.

In Mini Max, Chou Chen-Yi posted a 58.800 in qualifying, placing 10th in his group and 19th overall, which put him into Group C. In the planned C+D Heat 1, he lined up 9th on the grid, but a red flag incident and timing system problems meant that the race was declared void. The heat will be re-run today, effectively giving him another chance to reset mentally and fight again for a strong start.

Junior Max:
Junior Max: Tseng struggles in qualifying, fights back in the heat

In the Junior Max class, Tseng Eason was unable to produce the lap he wanted in qualifying, recording a 55.389 that left him 22nd in his group and 43rd overall, placing him in Group C. Despite the disappointing grid position, he showed his race pace again in the C+D Heat 1, starting from P21 and steadily working his way forward lap by lap to finish 13th. The strong recovery drive helped him claw back several places and build confidence for Heats 2 and 3.

Senior Max: Sasaki disqualified on weight, forced to start heats from the back

Although Heat 1 in Senior Max has yet to be completed, qualifying alone was dramatic for Taiwan’s entrant. After setting his time, Sasaki Yoshito was disqualified when his kart came in under the minimum weight at post-session scrutineering, reportedly short by only around 100 grams. As a result, all of his qualifying times were voided, and both his group and overall classification were marked as DQ, meaning he will have to start the upcoming heats from the very back of the grid.

The C+D Heat 1 has also been postponed to today due to schedule changes, and Sasaki will launch his fightback from the last grid slot. How far he can climb in these relatively short heats will be one of the key storylines to follow in the coming races.

DD2 Senior: Hong steps up in qualifying, Kao solid, Fu retires in Q

In DD2 Senior, the three Taiwanese drivers each faced very different situations in qualifying.

Hong Shengya appeared to find a better setup direction in qualifying, lowering his time to a 52.880 that placed him 16th in his group and 32nd overall. Compared with the previous day, it was a clear step forward, suggesting that the team’s adjustments are starting to work.

Kao Jie completed qualifying with a 52.993 to rank 20th in his group and 40th overall. His performance was consistent and in line with the team’s expectations.

After the start of qualifying, Fu Yu-Shu made a mistake at Turn 3, slid into the gravel and could not rejoin, ending his session as a DNF. He was classified 35th in his group and 71st overall. It was a painful qualifying session, but it also gave him a very direct lesson about the track limits and the risks around the circuit.

The scheduled DD2 Senior C+D Heat 1 was also postponed to today due to timing issues and delays. Whether the three drivers can convert their qualifying positions into strong race results will be revealed in today’s heats.

E20 Master
E20 Master electric class: Chiu continues to bring the kart home

In the E20 Master electric class, Chiu Yi-Hsien set a 56.251 in qualifying to place 15th, matching his overall position as well. In the heat that followed he started from P15 and finished in the same position, 16.380 seconds behind the winner. Despite not feeling at his physical best, Chiu has continued to complete every session, steadily building up his World Finals experience and race mileage.

Delays and heat format: a pivotal day ahead

• 先依排位名次將選手分入 A、B、C、D 四組;
• 預賽則以 A+B、A+C、A+D、B+C、B+D 的方式混合比賽,透過多場預賽累積積分;
Because of timing failures and red-flag interruptions, most of the Heat 1 races for the Mini, Senior and DD2 classes that were supposed to run yesterday have been postponed to today. Under the event regulations, the heat format is as follows:
• Drivers are first placed into Groups A, B, C and D based on qualifying results;
• The heats are then run in mixed combinations of A+B, A+C, A+D, B+C and B+D, with points scored in each race;
• Final transfer spots and starting positions for the main finals are determined by the total points from all heats.

In other words, from today onward, Heats 1, 2, and 3 are no longer just “testing” sessions, but decisive battles that will shape the finals, where every lap, every start, and every position can change the ultimate outcome.

Times not ideal, but no one gives up: Taiwan heads into the real heat battles

Overall, the third day of running saw most of the Taiwanese drivers qualify below their expectations. Some were hampered by mechanical issues, some were disqualified for the smallest of weight margins, and others made mistakes that left them starting from the back. Yet in a high-pressure, world-class environment, simply taking every start and steadily moving forward in the heats is already a test—and a sharpening—of their abilities.

When the results on paper are not ideal, patience and resilience matter even more. Whether it is a charge from the very back of the grid or a measured push from the middle of the pack, every Taiwanese driver still has the chance to rewrite the story. The next few heats will be the real test of how they handle pressure and respond to adversity.
